Subramaniya swamy attacked by lawyers

swamyA group of advocates on Tuesday assaulted Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy and hurled eggs and invectives on him at the Madras High Court hall in full view of a couple of judges. Swamy, who was at the court in connection with the Chidambaram Natarajar temple case, received a couple of punches on his back from the unidentified unruly advocates.

Around 11.30 a.m., a group of advocates, agitating on the Sri Lankan issue, took out a procession, as usual shouting slogans against the Sri Lankan genocide. When they barged into the third court, pushing aside the cops – including an assistant commissioner guarding the entrance – to obstruct the proceedings before justice Misra and Chandru, the lawyers already present in the court hall raised slogans against Swamy. They locked the doors from inside, thereby prevented the police and the gun-wielding personal guards of Swamy from entering the court hall. They abused Swamy and accused him of supporting the Sinhalese. They also said Swamy was an accused in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case and expressed their solidarity with the LTTE.

In the melee, eggs were thrown at Swamy. One advocate smashed an egg at the back of Swamy. Two other eggs missed their target and fell on the table. Another egg hit Swamy’s forehead and broke up, splashing its contents on his face. Swamy, with the help of his junior lawyers, ran to safety and took refuge under the judges’ podium
